A simple definition
Capital migration is the planned move of wealth, property and residence from one country to another. Sometimes it's a winter base. Sometimes it's a family relocating for good, a family office adding U.S. property, or a business owner opening in Florida. In every case, money and people cross a border, and two sets of rules apply at once.
Who it's for
- Individuals and couples planning a second home or a winter base, part-time at first.
- Families relocating, with schools, health coverage and residency to settle.
- Family offices adding Florida property or a U.S. presence to a family's holdings.
- Business owners moving or expanding a company, often with their family close behind.
What it involves
Six areas come up in almost every move. Each has its own experts, and each affects the others:
- Residency and days: how much time you'll spend here, and what that means for tax and immigration.
- Structure and estate: whether property is held personally, by trust or by company, decided with your lawyer and accountant.
- Banking and currency: U.S. accounts, converting funds at a fair rate, and proving where the money came from.
- Protection: property insurance, flood cover and health coverage while you're here.
- The property: where, what kind, and how to buy it well.
- Settling in: someone to look after the home while you're away, schools, and the first season.
Why the order matters
Most costly surprises come from doing the right things in the wrong order. Signing a contract before deciding how to hold the property. Converting currency on the closing day at the bank's rate. Booking a long winter before counting the days. Each expert does their part well; the trouble is in the gaps between them.
We explain the sequence in more detail in why the property comes last.
Where an advisor fits
Your attorney and your accountant remain your experts for legal and tax questions, and nothing replaces them. A capital migration advisor works alongside them. We see the whole move, set out the decisions in the right order, introduce the specialists you don't yet have, and keep everyone working from one plan until the move is complete.
